This report presents the findings of the State of Social Enterprise Survey 2015 – the largest, most credible and most rigorous survey of social enterprises in the UK. This survey is also the largest undertaken since Social Enterprise UK started this series in 2007. Social enterprises are businesses that trade to tackle social problems, improving communities, people’s life chances, or the environment. They make their money from selling goods and services in the open market, but they reinvest their profits back into the business or the local community. The 2011 and 2013 surveys revealed an increasingly detailed picture of social enterprises, showing that while the public sector was still an important market, more social enterprises are now trading with the general public and an increasing number operate internationally. Both surveys also showed a growing number of social enterprise start-ups in recent years, and demonstrated that the leadership of social enterprises much more closely reflects the communities they work in than the leadership of mainstream businesses.
